One off the usual schedule. Ashwagandha is the root extract your calmest friend keeps pressing on you — sold to drop your cortisol, melt your stress, and hand your nervous system back. Most viral supplements fall apart the second you check the studies. This is the rare one where, if you grade the claim it’s actually sold on, the evidence mostly shows up for work.

The calm-down claim is the one that survives the lab.

Start with the good news, because there’s a lot of it. Pool the randomized trials and the stress claim holds: a 2025 review in BJPsych Open combined 14 controlled trials — 713 people, most taking around 600 mg a day of root extract for about eight weeks — and found ashwagandha meaningfully lowered anxiety, stress, and improved sleep versus placebo. And the cortisol half isn’t just marketing either: a separate 2024 meta-analysis pooled nine trials’ actual blood draws and found serum cortisol dropped too.

Now the fine print, because “holds up” isn’t “miracle.” The cortisol drop is real but modest — the pooled number barely clears the line of significance, so it’s a nudge, not a reset. The trials are mostly small, short, and vary a lot, which means “it lowers stress” rests on firmer ground than any exact figure. And this is where the claim stops: ashwagandha is a stress-and-sleep story, not the testosterone booster, fat-burner, or all-purpose tonic the same bottles get sold as. That’s a different claim, and it doesn’t hold up the same way.

The verdict: for once, the calm-supplement hype mostly matches the trials. Ashwagandha genuinely moves stress, anxiety, and sleep in the studies — just don’t buy it expecting anything past that, and don’t mistake a modest cortisol dip for a switch you can flip.

One thing before you buy

Supplements aren’t pre-checked by the FDA for what’s actually in the bottle, and ashwagandha products vary widely. If you’re comparing options, a third-party purity seal — NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport, or USP — means an outside lab verified the contents. Worth knowing too: the trials mostly ran about eight weeks, so the long-term picture just isn’t well mapped yet.
